While looking through my newsfeed this morning there was one item that caught my attention. The article was by Claire Cain Miller in the Upshot section of The New York Times, dated September 25, 2017, entitled, “How Did Marriage Become a Mark of Privilege?”
Everybody got married when I was a kid back in the 50’s. Shacking up was frown upon. This is the name given to people who set up home without the benefit of a marriage license. In the article cited by Claire Cain Miller, one of the reasons for not getting married was unemployment. In other words, people think they are too poor to get married.
Anyway, I thought the article was very interesting. I personally think fewer adults are getting married and there are various reasons. Money may be one of the reasons but it is not the only one, and probably not the main reason.
In the coming weeks, I will be writing more about purpose in marriage. It is a topic close to my heart.
